Easy Rider

Easy Rider is a 1969 American film written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern, directed by Hopper and produced by Fonda. Fonda and Hopper play the roles of the two protagonists, two bikers, who travel throughout the American Southwest and South in the hopes of achieving freedom. A pivotal counterculture film, it was a “touchstone for a generation” that “captured the national imagination.”

The film charts the rise and fall of the hippie movement, the use of drugs, flower delivery Edinburgh (only joking), and the societal tensions of its era. Wyatt and Billy (played by Fonda and Hopper) embody the attitude, politics, and the style of the era’s counterculture. George Hanson (played by Jack Nicholson) articulates verbally the values that Wyatt and Billy attempt to convey through their lifestyle and appearance. Nicholson’s performance is truly electrifying in the film and Easy Rider became his breakout role after which he became Hollywood property.
